When other Africans call Cameroon “Africa in miniature” or “the continent” they are actually referring to the way everything found in Africa is condensed in this one carrefour country. Over 250 tribes, Christianity in all its forms and shapes, the Muslim religion in its full length and breath, all ancient African religions and belief systems, Pygmies and Bantus, Sahel and Forests, Coastal people and mountain people, herders and farmers, hunters and settlers, the highly educated and the not-so educated, anglophones and francophones etcetc all living peacefully and happily in one space since 1982. But amongst others, what is the secret to this unsung success story? The answer is President Paul Biya.
Since he came to power in 1982, every decision has been based on maintaining the equilibrium that was responsible for the success of this mosaic. Development projects, political appointments and the “sharing of the national cake” did not leave any segment of the society out. Everyone felt involved and the variety was turned into strength.
Instead of fighting each other, Cameroonians under the wise guidance of Paul Biya mixed, inter-married, were free to settle anywhere and live peacefully. You would find a “hausa quarter” in Douala, Yaounde, Kumba and Bamenda. You can see the Ewondo quarter in Douala. In Douala or Bafoussam, you will see a “banyangi quarter”. In Bertoua, Ebolowa, Ambam you will see a “Bamoun quarter”, etc. Even foreigners like Nigerians or Central Africans, have their quarters in Cameroon cities where they live peacefully.
This mixture was encouraged by Paul Biya. Today, you find families where the parents are francophones while the children are anglophones. Muslims and Christians even inter-marry in Cameroon. Today, in the University of Buea (English speaking), you will find the best student being a child from a “francophone” family.
As many African countries find it impossible to get their communities to live together, many say Paul Biya has performed a miracle in Cameroon.
No wonder, election after election Cameroonians have preferred to live together under President Paul Biya instead of starting an adventure with politicians who promise heaven on earth while preaching and encouraging division.
As a new world-order is emerging and the internet spreads hate and divisions, Cameroonians have crystalized around President Paul BIYA to safeguard their living together miracle.
No wonder the majority still see him as their president beyond 2025, despite the baseless rumors and attacks.
